"Romi Lipi Action Front" condoles dealth of Dr. Olivinho Gomes

"Romi Lipi Action Front" condoles death of Dr. Olivinho Gomes.

The "Romi Lipi Action Front" is saddened by the sudden and untimely death of Dr. Olivinho Gomes ex- Vice Chancellor of the Goa University and an ardent supporter of the Roman Script for Konkani .Dr Olivinho Gomes was himself a Professor of Konkani and strongly felt that the Roman Script can go hand in hand with the Devnagari Script, to the greater advantage of our mother tongue Konkani. He strongly felt that the Goa Legislative Assembly, in an unnecessary haste,to expedite the Official Language Act of Goa, had done a grave injustice to a very big section of the Goan Society , by ignoring the aspirations of the Roman Script readers and writers of Konkani, in Goa , Mumbai and Overseas. Whenever Dr, Olivinho Gomes spoke on the subject of the Roman Script, he spoke with self-conviction supported by facts and figures.Dr Olivinho was equally at ease with the Devanagari Script as well as the Roman Script and has written books in both the Scripts,in addition to the English language. The "Romi Lipi Action Front" has lost an active Konkani worker and a friend in the death of Dr. Olivinho. We pray to the Almighty to grant eternal rest to the soul of Dr. Olivinho and strenght to his wife and family to put up with this great personal loss.

Pushing Konkani Cinema Ahead

Pushing Konkani Cinema Ahead

- by CLARA A RODRIGUES

The famous and much loved tiatrist duo of Wilmix and Sharon were on a four-year break. Yes, a break from music albums and tiatrs but not from creativity. The duo, who have been entertaining Goan audiences for the past 40 years or so, are back with a movie ‘Tum Kite Kortolo Aslo?’ - an intriguing title that will leave the audience with questions and answers to choose from.
The story revolves around relationships, says Claron Mazarello, the son of this talented couple, who is making his debut in the realm of movie making. It speaks of the attraction and love of a husband-wife relationship. It has a typical Goan setting, with Goan elements, like the motorcycle pilot continues Claron. Claron is of the opinion that Goa has a lot of talent. “We went to Mumbai, sat through shoots, saw what it takes to call shots. In all, it has taken us four years to get this movie going.”
Ask him if he is optimistic of the outcome of the movie considering that the Goan audience ironically do not go out in large numbers to watch indigenous movies, he says, it is not the idea of making a movie that is paramount, what matters is that we are doing what we really want to do from our hearts.
The cast of the film are famous personalities from the ‘tiatr’ world. Agnelo Lobo, Wilson, Humbert, Fermeeno, Effie, Eddison, Michael, Roseferns, Menino De Bandar, Prince Jacob, Pradeep, Franky, Jimmy, Jose De Velim, Ancy Gonsalves to name a few. Claron Mazarello and Sharon as well as other talented artistes will be a part of it.
It was not easy to make the movie, which will soon be wrapping up its shooting soon. Finance plays an important role. “The budget is somewhere around 55 lakhs, out of which around 20 lakhs or so will be financed by government’s schemes for film makers. We are trying to get a sponsor. The remaining money is from individual contributions,” he states.
The movie has beautifully captured the scenic beauty of the locale in the interiors of Goa. Says Claron “We wanted a quiet place, where there wouldn’t be many people, so that we could shoot in peace.”
Assisting them in the production of ‘Tum Kite Kortolo Aslo’ is Dominic Dias, Gilbert Mascarehnas, and a unit 26 other technicians.
Goan Images, a folk troupe will also be seen in the movie. Through this movie we would also like to dispel people’s attitude towards dance. “Many do not send their children to dance because of a certain perceptions, but in reality, through dancing you can earn a lot of money and learn a lot”.
The movie employed a technique of telling the story via flashbacks. An unconventional method but at the same time a change for audiences who are used to regular ways of telling a story.
Something has to be said on the music front. The music director for the movie will be Baltazar Fernandes from Chorao. The same man who wrote music scores for Bollywood directors like ‘Kalyanji Anandji’. Each song will have elaborate music arrangements. Siddhanath Buyao and Shantanu have done the music recordings at Buyao Theatres.
Despite what critics and others might say, Claron and the team behind ‘Tum Kite Kortolo Aslo’ are confident of hitting well with the people. “My parents have been entertaining people for so long. I trust them to know the pulse of the people,” he says.

HISTORIC KONKANI MUSIC FESTIVAL - 2002

HISTORIC KONKANI MUSIC FESTIVAL
- Exclusive Report & Pictures by Alister Miranda
www.goa-world.com

Konkani Music fever has virtually gripped Goa, and Margao in particular, which plays host to the historic first ever Konkani Music Festival, which is all set to
take off at 1630 hrs (IST) tomorrow (February 9, 2002).

Hectic finishing touches were being given to the pandal and stage (that has been named after the late Chris Perry) by the dedicated organisers, led by the
untiring co-ordinator Sai Palondikar till late this evening. Fr. Peter Cardozo and his handpicked musicians converged on the venue at 1930 hrs for a final rehearsal.

Given the honour to musically open the Festival, Maestro Fr Cardozo informed that he had composed a 15-minute non-stop piece that would start with Raag Bhageshree – the Alaap sung by Fr Cardozo, and move on to dulpods, Chris Perry’s 'Lisboa' and many other Konkani favourites. An ensemble comprising four violins, two trumpets, one saxophone, four guitars, one drum set, three gumots, one congo and five singers
would belt out the East-West fusion composition.

Abdonio Rodrigues – ace drummer who has played under the baton of the legendary Frank Fernandes for the Konkani films 'Amchem Noxib' and 'Nirmon'), Agnelo
Dias (trumpet), Peter Lobo (saxophone), ex-deputy superintendent of Goa police Domingos Rodrigues (violin), Fr. Neri Mendes (violin) and Fr. Freddy Rodrigues (guitar) are some of the prominent musicians in Fr. Cardozo’s line-up.

A terrecotta bust of the great Indian classical singer the late Moghubai Kurdikar (sculpted by Valentino Gaspar from Verna) was ready and waiting to be
unveiled by her daughter, the celebrated Goan classical singer Kishori Amonkar, who will then be escorted to the dais to the tunes of noted musician Emiliano da Cruz’ Mandolin.

The Konkani tiatrists too are all geared up to unleash a 2 ½ hour tiatr-based presentation. Co-ordinated by Agnelo de Borim and John Claro, to sing the popular
cantaram to Mariano Rodrigues’ arrangement are M.Boyer, Remmie Colaco, Antonette Mendes, Rita Rose, Joe Rose, H Britton, Jr. Rod, C. D’Silva, Wilson & Sharon Mazarello, Young Chico, Mil-Mel-Nel and Anthony San. Providing rib-ticklers will be Prince Jacob, Humbert, John D’Silva and Selvy.

The arrival of the Mangalorean musicians led by Eric
Ozario and Wilfy Remimbus was eagerly awaited as we
left the venue at 2130 hours to the strains of Fr.
Cardozo’s Alaap.

Although positive enthusiasm permeated all around the
empty pandal, a negative whiff wafted across as a
small pessimistic sounding group expressed fears of
poor attendance since the event coincided with the
Carnival.

They were also animatedly discussing the
misunderstandings that led to singer Ulhas Buyao
non-participation in the Festival.

Solidly backed by the Dempo Group, the Festival is
aimed at bringing together Konkani music of every form
and style.

We wish it all success.
Long live Konkani Music!!!!!!
